Gloriousness and wretchedness need each other. One inspires us, the other softens us.

This is great baseball

With Jeremy into the Diamondbacks, I'm watching game 5 with great interest. He made it to the 5th inning before he had to go to sleep. It's 11:04pm and there are 3 outs 'til the D-backs go to the world series. It sure sucks that kids can't watch the end of these post season games. I plan to wake him in a few mintues if I'm sure the Diamondbacks are going to win. Over on the other channel, it's a 0-0 game between the Yankees and Mariners. Did I ever say that I love baseball?

Mr. Bush, Exercise Sober Restraint in Responding

If you feel that Bush needs to show restraint in responding to the events of last Tuesday, head to the Actforchange Site to send the President a letter reflecting the following: "We condemn without limit the cowardly terrorist attacks which claimed thousands of innocent victims on September 11. No cause can possibly justify such actions. "But what happens now is up to the United States. These criminals deserve to be identified, tracked down, and brought to justice, along with any backers than can be clearly identified. "But already there are calls for war against unnamed enemies, for funding of missile defense systems that do not work, and for imposing limits on hard earned civil liberties. Deep and ugly prejudice against Arab-Americans has reared. "Congress has passed resolutions essentially declaring war against any and all targets to be chosen by the President, now and in the future. This has given Mr. Bush the authorization to take any military action he chooses. This makes the future choices of Mr. Bush all the more important."

A TIME FOR PEACE, NOT RETALIATION

At TomPaine.com, Elijah Wald writes that this is A time for peace, not retaliation: If we want a safer world in this situation, we cannot achieve it militarily. For decades, the United States has acted as if, as the world's most powerful nation, it could safely explore violent solutions to international issues, while itself remaining inviolate. Every time the United States has bombed a major city -- be it Hiroshima, Hanoi, Baghdad, or Tripoli -- people on the ground must have wished that they could do the same to New York or Washington. As United States operatives facilitated and supported murderous, terrorist regimes throughout Latin America, Africa, and Asia, millions of "innocent" civilians must, in their pain and anger, have wished that similar death and destruction could be visited on us. As we learned in Oklahoma City, such feelings are felt even here in the United States, raging at deadly governmental assaults on homegrown cults and militias.

Nine Minutes, Twenty Seconds Review

I just finished reading Nine Minutes, Twenty Seconds: The Tragedy & Triumph of ASA Flight 529. With the lack of time to read books and a long backlog of worthy material, I'm not quite sure why I picked this one up. From "Into to Thin Air" to "The Perfect Storm", to now this title, we seem to have a grim fascination with detailed accounts of personal tragedy. It certainly didn't make for good bedtime conversation... "Honey, did you know that a 26 year old with burns over 80% her body has a better chance for survival than a 70 year old with burns over 20% of hers?"

Varnaline - Songs In A Northern Key

I've be listening to the new album by alt-grunge-county band, Varnaline. The album lacks consistency, but there are some wonderful tunes on it, particularly the first track, "I Still Dream" and "Indian Summer Breakdown". Check out: Varnaline - Songs In A Northern Key
